Dog Phrases

How many dog phrases do you know? How many dog phrases are there? I don't know if anybody can say exactly, so I will attempt to list all the dog phrases I can think of. I will also define all the dog phrases that I list to the best of my ability.

The first dog phrase that comes to mind is, The dog days of summer. I understand this to mean when it is hot and still like dogs lying around on a hut summer day.

The next dog phrase that I can think of is, Sick as a dog. And I understand this to mean when we are really badly ill we lay around like a dog does when he is sick.

The next dog phrase I can think of is, Dog years. This is the ratio of dog aging to human calendar years roughly figured to be a seven to one ratio.

The next dog phrase that comes to mind is, Dog day. This seems to mean that a day seems very long.

The next dog phrase that I can think of is, Dog tired. I understand this to mean that when we are very tired, we feel like a dog looks when he is tired with his tongue hanging out and panting.

The next dog phrase on the list is when you tell someone to, Stop doggin' it. You use this phrase when you want someone to hurry up because they are meandering around like a slow dog does.

Another dog phrase that comes to mind is when you tell someone to, Stop doggin' me. You would say this if you wanted someone to stop following you around.

The next dog phrase that I think of is, Putting on the dog. You say this when you are describing someone who is showing off or doing things up really fancy and dressy. This may come from when dogs do tricks and show off…

Another dog phrase used in song lyrics is, Meaner than a junkyard dog. This one seems pretty self explanatory.

The next dog phrase i think of is when one describes an unattractive person, usually a girl as a dog. And although some dogs are very cute for a dog, we don not want the girl we are going out with to have the face of a dog.

And finally, my last dog phrase coming to mind is, He is sly as a dog. This dog phrase indicates that a person seems to be smart and somewhat tricky.

This is by no means a complete list of all dog phrases, there is "Three dog night, an Eskimo phrase that means so cold it would take three dogs to bed down with to keep warm. And there is, "Raining cats and dogs." When the rain is so heavy that dogs and cats drown and float through the streets and it seems like it rained cats and dogs. but this partial list is my list and what it is too.
